The NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer declares that only Ukraine has to make the decision on the euroatlantic integration. He told about it on joint a press - conferences with the President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko.
"It is absolutely clear that any course which concerns integration of Ukraine into NATO or EU is exclusively independent and sovereign decision of Ukraine, and nobody else can't make this decision for Ukrainians", - he told.
Thus he noted that only representatives of Alliance can make the decision on approach of Ukraine to NATO, including on the invitation of Ukraine to the plan of action on membership in NATO.
The secretary general noted that in this process it is important to understand in what the euroatlantic integration consists. "The euroatlantic integration isn't that in the territory of Ukraine military bases will be placed, isn't that will be placed voyenno - sea bases, isn't that the Ukrainian military will be compelled to take part in military missions of NATO", - Scheffer told. He noted that it is myths which it has to discredit today, transfers "UNIAN".
Scheffer noted that for today Ukraine is the only country - the partner of NATO which takes part in all operations of forces of NATO.
Answering a question of journalists what exactly Ukraine needs to make to join the plan of action on membership in NATO in December of this year, the NATO Secretary General noted that all decisions in Alliance are made on the basis of practical results of this or that country. "They aren't based on quantity or the fact of the held events, all of them are based on practical results and overall performance, the same will concern also accession of Ukraine to PDCh", - Scheffer told.
He also noted that NATO will support close contacts with the President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko and representatives of the Ukrainian power and to consult on questions which need to be solved before December meeting of NATO.
